SEMI FINALS 1.... JOE LANG 2.... CHRIS BROGDEN 0
1974/75 ...............(Iron Horse)...... ....(Iron Horse )
The all Iron Horse first semi final matched Joe Lang with Chris Brogden in what turned out to be a pretty much one side affair.
Chris Brogden soon found himself trailing and could not get back on terms with a rampant Joe Lang who quickly took leg one.
It was the same story in the second leg with Lang racing away with a180 maximum to leave Brogden applauding as Lang took the leg and game with a double ten finish.
SEMI FINAL 2... ROY DAVIES 0..GRENVILLE THOMAS 2
1974/75 ..............(Slipper A)................. (Slipper A)
Another clash of team mates in the second semi final saw pre match favourite Roy Davies race away to the double and promptly freeze, allowing the steady throwing of Grenville Thomas to come from behind to take the leg.
Roy Davies looked set to correct the deficit with some good scoring shots in game two and got to the double with his opponent still wanting 296. Unfortunately the double finish eluded him, allowing Gren Thomas to come down to double top, which he confidently secured to join Joe Lang in the final..
THE FINAL...... JOE LANG 2 .....GRENVILLE THOMAS 0
1974/75 ............(Iron Horse).......... (Slipper A)
With the atmosphere just right Joe Lang and Grenville Thomas took the stage and it was Lang who quickly determined the pace taken immediate command.
Grenville Thomas failed to match his opponent and saw the first leg go to Lang when still requiring 203. In the second leg Lang “went to town” and with a brilliant 15 dart out game of scores of 100, 60, 140, 140, and 61 out, became a very worthy Dowlais singles Champion.

SEMI FINAL 1.BRIAN STARBUCK 2.... TERRY THOMAS 0
1975/76........... (Carmarthen C)............ (Gurnos Club)
The first singles semi final saw Brian Starbuck take on three times singles champion Terry Thomas, who taking a while to settle down let Starbuck take a considerable lead and take the leg with a double five shot.
Back came Terry Thomas in game two and with much better darts was first to the double, but failing to clinch double top, he allowed Brian Starbuck a chance at finishing and with a double ten last dart gained his final place.
SEMI FINAL 2..HARRY MORGAN 1..JACKIE MAHONEY 2
1975/76............(Carmarthen C)............ (Martyrs Club)
The second semi final matched Harry Morgan and Jackie Mahoney and it turned into a tremendous match, with Harry Morgan making his 68 finish look dead easy.
Undeterred “Snatchy” Mahoney upped the tempo and equalized the legs with great darts, that included two ton shots, a140 an incredible bust shot on 176 with a 180 maximum before he nailed his double finish.
The decider was just as exciting and with Morgan requiring 71 Mahoney took the honours with a double sixteen.
FINAL... BRIAN STARBUCK 2..... JACKIE MAHONEY 1
1975/76..... (Carmarthen C).............. (Martyrs Club)
The highlight of the evening provided a suitable climax with Starbuck and Mahoney thrilling the crowd with top class performances. Starbuck gave a taste of what was to come starting with a 120 score, but although first to the double the first game went to Mahoney with a double ten checkout.
The next game was as close as the first and again it was Starbuck first to the double, but this time there was no mistake, as he denied Mahoney a shot at 36 with his first dart at double top.
With the Championship hanging on the final leg both players turned on the pressure.
Consecutive tons from Starbuck, countered with a ton,140, from Mahoney, who wanting just 56, came to the oche. In deathly silence followed by groans from the crowd he failed to nail it, allowing Starbuck to take the title with double top exit.

SEMI FINAL 1.....RAY PHILLIPS 2..... TOMMY WILLIAMS 0
1976/77..............(Carmarthen C)............... ( Norton)
Both Tommy Williams and Ray Phillips started slowly in the nights first semi final but with a late flourish of scores of 125 and a ton, Phillips was first to the double, only to bring gasps from the audience as he failed on the double finish with repeated near misses, allowing Williams a chance at tops before, Ray finally hit double two
The second leg was much closer with steady 85 shots from Phillips countered with consecutive tons from Williams, but again Phillips allowed his opponent only one finish opportunity before he wrapped it up with a double four out shot.
SEMI FINAL 2 ...RON LLOYD 2...... JACKIE MAHONEY 1
1976/77 ..............(Labour A)................ (Labour A)
The second semi final brought together Labour Club mates Ronnie Lloyd and Jackie Mahoney who in a great first leg battle gave notice of the darts to come before Mahoney took the leg with his first dart at double four.
Ron Lloyd set the pace in leg two with a hatrick of tons giving him ample breathing space to clinch the leg on double five finish.
The decider was even better with a brace of tons from Mahoney, countered with a 140 and ton shot from Lloyd to leave himself with 96, which he duly disposed of with a sixty double 18, to reach his first ever final.
THE FINAL........... RON LLOYD 2......... RAY PHILLIPS 1
1976/77.................. (Labour A)............ (Carmarthen C)
Both Ray Philips and Ron Lloyd demonstrated their consistency in the nights final with scores of eighties and sixties getting them down to the double which Ron Lloyd snapped up with a confident double top checkout.
Two ton scores from Ray Phillips in the second game left him a double top finish which proved no problem as he made it one game apiece.
The last leg was a nailbiter, with both players matching each others throws until they got in sight of the double and with Ray Phillips waiting for a shot at 68 a silent Penydarren Club saw Ron Lloyd become Singles Champion with a double top. ****

1977/78................... (Carmarthen C)............ (Labour A)
The first game saw defending champion Ron Lloyd take on Will John Hughes and with Ron Lloyd unable to respond to Will John Hughes 140 and ton scores, it was no surprise when Hughes took the lead leg with a double 13 shot out.
Digging his heels in Lloyd retaliated in the second leg and when Hughes failed to clinch a double 14 shot he stepped up to level the proceedings with a double top.
With Ron Lloyd striving to capture his usual form, Hughes with three ton scores shot to the front and calmly dispatched the winning dart to proceed to the final.
SEMI FINAL 2 ......BILLY COOKSEY 2..... RAY PHILLIPS 0
1977/78................ (Carmarthen C) ............(Carmarthen C)
Ray Phillips Champion in 1971 and Billy Cooksey Champion in 1974 were both looking to make it to another final and the early running came from Glamorgan star Phillips, who with two tons and a 121 shot left himself double 18, but Billy Cooksey denied him any attempt by finishing 72 with treble 12, 18, double 9 out.
With his tail up Cooksey started with a ton in game two but it was Ray Phillips who got the first crack at the double finish only to miss and allow Cooksey to promptly gobble up double ten and a final spot.
FINAL.........WILL JOHN HUGHES 2... BILLY COOKSEY 1
1977/78...........(Carmarthen C).............. (Carmarthen C)
The all Carmarthen final got off to an explosive start with a ton apiece to both players and with useful follow up scores Will John Hughes hit the front. A 120 shot from Cooksey, when requiring 140, putting him on a finish shot, turned the tide, and with Hughes unable to get back on terms, Cooksey took the first leg in 20 darts.
The second leg was even better two tons from Hughes surpassed by a ton and four sixties from Cooksey but with three misses at double 18, Cooksey let Hughes take it.
Two tons from Cooksey in the final leg were overshadowed with a maximum from Hughes and right up to the finish there was nothing in it. With the board showing 72 for both players, Will John had first crack and brilliantly hit 12, 20, double top to become Dowlais Singles Champion for **********************************************************

1978/79........... (Horse & Groom A)......... (Labour A)
Contesting his third semi final in five years Jackie Mahoney was hot favourite to progress to the final in his match with Barry Thomas who was making his finals night debut. Unfortunately for Mahoney it all went wrong as Barry Thomas upset the form book by winning two legs to nil to shock the Martyrs Club audience.
SEMI FINAL 2..ADRIAN THOMAS 2.. TEGWYN LEWIS 1 1978/79 ................(Treifor A).................. (Labour A)
Another upset looked on the cards as Tegwyn Lewis took the first leg against Adrian Thomas but the Treifor Arms man came back strongly to take the next two legs to contest his first ever final.
THE FINAL ...ADRIAN THOMAS 3........ BARRY THOMAS 1
1978/79................ (Treifor A)................ (Horse Groom A)
In the first ever five leg final both players took some time to settle in, until a ton from Adrian Thomas put him into a considerable lead, which although pulled back by a 140 from Barry Thomas, left him first stab at the double which he confidently tucked away.
Hitting back immediately Barry Thomas started the second leg with a 121 score followed by a ton and racing to the double he made it one game all, with a double five finish. The third game went Adrian’s way with both players struggling to reach their normal scoring form until the Treifor man settled it.
At 1-2 down the pressure was once again upon Barry Thomas to get back in the match and with hardly anything in it, they both missed opportunities at the double finish before Adrian capitilising on a wrong shot mishap by Barry Thomas, took the leg and match to become champion.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1979/80
Defending champion Adrian Thomas went through but last years runner up Barry Thomas failed in his quest to go one better this year.
Glamorgan county players Ron Lloyd, Peter Locke and Ray Phillips showed their class in reaching round two together with promising youngsters Mark Virgin and Peter Aleman, who caring little for reputations powered their way through to round two. With eight maximums and numerous ton plus scores the standard was very high and nobody scored more than john O’Brian who bagged a brace of 180,s
SEMI FINAL 1...... BILLY COOKSEY 2... MIKE JAMES 0
1979/80.................... (Labour A)........... (Iron Horse B)
Finals night regular Bill Cooksey faced the finals night newcomer Mike James of the Iron Horse B who having done very well to get to this stage took a while to get into his stride as did Billy Cooksey who just shaded the first leg.
A much better second game saw Mike James match a ton start from Cooksey with one of his own , but with Cooksey finding his length with a further 140 and ton scores, he booked his final place with a double six checkout.
SEMI FINAL 2 ......RAY JONES 2 ........VIVIAN MORGAN 0
1979/80................ (Pant Club A)............. (Norton A)
The second semi saw Ray “Duck eggs” Jones from Abertwyssog set off at a cracking pace against Viv Morgan with two tons apiece from each player keeping them close until a 134 shot from Jones left 38, which he nailed with his next throw.
Leg two saw Ray Jones in even better form starting with throws of 125, 100, and 140 and with time to spare he clinched his final spot.
THE FINAL.............RAY JONES 3........ BILLY COOKSEY 0
1979/80.................. (Pant Club A).......... (Labour Club A)
The five leg final started with a bang with Ray Jones replying to a 140 opener from Billy Cooksey with a ton and 140 shot and in just 17 darts took leg one.
Consecutive ton openers in game two from Cooksey showed his determination to get back on level terms, but showing consistent accuracy Ray Jones hit back with another 140 and ton shots and with the crowd willing him on just failed on a 160 finish by clipping the wire on double top. His next visit to the board made it two nil.
Knowing he had to win the third leg to stay in the match Cooksey repeatedly peppered the twenty bed but the high scores eluded him leaving Ray Jones with shots 140, 100, and a brilliant 60, 18, double top finish completing an almost faultless performance.

The first leg went to Peter O,Sullivan when with a140 shot to leave himself 58 he finished with two darts. The next game went to Tommy Sullivan who keeping just ahead with two ton scores, he checked out on double one.
In the decider Peter O,Sullivan went off like a rocket with consecutive tons and a 140
and with a 17, 14, double 18 finish he was in the final.
SEMI FINAL 2....... MIKE JAMES 2........ RAY BROWN 1
1980/81................. (Iron Horse A)........ (Iron Horse A)
The second semi final matched team mates Ray Brown and Mike James of the Iron Horse and it was James who was the quicker to settle taking leg one with a bit to spare. Ray Brown quickly retaliated in game two when with three tons he raced to the double and finished at his first attempt.
The decider saw James keep the lead from start to finish and with Brown needing 18,
Mike James with a double ten clincher joined Peter O,Sullivan in the final.
THE FINAL....PETER O,SULLIVAN 3...... MIKE JAMES 1
1980/81.............. (Morlais A)................... (Iron Horse A)
With the crowds appetite whetted the players took the stage for the five legged final and what a match they provided. James started cautiously but soon got into his stride with a hatrick of tons but although first to the finishing shot he could not crack the elusive double and lost the leg to a grateful Peter O,Sullivan.
The second leg saw O,Sullivan turn in a brilliant performance with scores of 98, 95, 121, 100, 79, double 4 out for an 18 dart finish. Another crowd pleasing third leg once again had O,Sullivan hitting the high scores and when he shaved the wire of double top when going for a 160 finish he looked set to take the title, but Mike James kept his cool to take the leg with a 48 finishing score. At 2-1 in O,Sullivans favour both scored steadily matching each others tons and eighty plus scores, but with 88 on the board Peter O,Sullivan with a 5, treble 17, double 16 finish, became the Dowlais Singles Champion for 1980/81.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1981/82 ....Round 1 Summary....Two maximums from Graham Williams(Norton) gave him a chance to add to his summer league champion tag while a maximum from Pat Cronin was not enough to see him progress. Very much in form Wayne Ward looked dead in the water against Tommy Sullivan but he rallied to scrape home as did three times finalist Jack “Snatchy” Mahoney. Bob Bassett who is impressing everyone in division two coasted home together with two division three hopefuls Carl Davies(Pant) and Keith Starbuck who is hoping to match his father Brian’s championship win in 1976.
SEMI FINAL 1........WAYNE WARD 2...... RON LLOYD 0
1981/82.................... (Brewers A)............ (Labour A)
Ron Lloyd and Wayne Ward faced each other in the first semi final and it was Lloyd who was first to find the big score with a 140, shot getting him first poke at the double but he missed it, and Wayne Ward didn’t, so with the first leg under his belt Ward proceeded to race ahead in leg two and once again finish well to book a final spot
.
SEMI FINAL 2....... STEVE DUNN 2........DENIS PHILLIPS 0
1981/82 ...................(Norton)..................... (Brewers A)
A 125 start in semi final two gave Steve Dunn the edge he needed to overcome Denis Phillips, not allowing the Brewer man a shot at the double top board requirement.
Maintaining the lead throughout the second leg Dunn gave good value for his final place when going out on double ten.
THE FINAL......... WAYNE WARD 3......... STEVE DUNN 1 With tremendous crowd support for both players it was Steve Dunn who responded first with a 125, opening score, and with Wayne Ward falling a little short of his usual high scoring form, it was Dunn who was first to the double.
Six darts at the double proved costly for Dunn as WayneWard pinched the leg with a 56 finish. Looking much more confident Wayne Ward went up a gear in round two and by repeatedly finding the sixty bed with his first dart, he sped to within 145 of the finish and with a classical 60, treble 15, double top finish, he went two in front.
Needing one game for the title it looked as if only something special could halt a rampant Wayne Ward and that’s exactly what Steve Dunn did, when with consistent scoring he pulled back a game with a 15, 20, bull checkout .
The fourth game was a cracker with the crowd responding to the players efforts and although Steve Dunn marked up scores of 60,60,60,140,60, the game and singles championship went to Wayne Ward who’s performance including a record breaking 180 maximum for the season earned him a standing ovation and Dowlais Singles title.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1982/83 ....Round 1 Summary...Nigel Williams(Martyrs) ended Wayne Wards retention of his title while Billy Cooksey made the fewest mistakes to progress at his venue. A pair of maximums from Mike Mew was not enough to see him through as the second round spot went to the cagey Billy Lang who joined1981 summer league champ Graham Williams. Ron Lloyd who went out in the semis last year pinched the top spot from Colin Jennings while Robert Lloyd pulled out all the stops to topple last years runner up Steve Dunn Five time finalist and three times champion Terry Thomas and Keith Evans led the Gurnos charge joining finals night regular Ray Phillips.
SEMI FINAL 1 ..TONY WILLIAMS 2..... RAY PHILLIPS 1
1982/83...............(Gurnos Club A) ...........(Brewers A)
The first semi final saw Tony Williams reply to an opening effort of 100 from Ray Phillips, with a 140 and 100 scores and although narrowly failing on the double finish, it was Ray Phillips who took the leg with a 57 closure.
Tony Williams rolled up his sleeves in game two and with a much sharper display levelled the scores, to set up a sudden death decider.
The last game looked to be a formality for Ray Phillips when with 65 on the board he made an uncharacteristic mess of it to give Tony Williams the chance he needed with a 5, 60, double 19 finishing shot.
SEMI FINAL 2 ....KELVIN DAVIES 2....... ALAN JONES 0
1982/83 ..................(Gurnos Club).......... (Gurnos Club)
The all Gurnos club semi final started with a brace of tons for Kelvin Davies putting himself out in front and finishing with his second dart at sixteen’s.
A 180m maximum in game two augured well for Kelvin’s final chances as once again he took the lead over Alan Jones and although Alan Jones hit back with two ton scores it was no surprise when Kelvin booked his final place with a clinical finish.
THE FINAL.......TONY WILLIAM 3... KELVIN DAVIES 2
The singles final saw Kelvin Davies capitalise on Tony Williams’s indifferent start with consecutive 140 and 100 scores, giving him first opportunity to go one up, with a 65 finishing score. The second leg went once again Kelvin’s way , as he countered a pair of tons from Tony Williams, with a hatrick of tons and again his finishing was deadly, to put himself two legs to nil in front
Game three was do-or-die for Tony Williams and he responded well, with two 140 shots in a row, landing him double top, which he secured at his first attempt.
A pair of tons for Kelvin Davies in game four, was bettered by a 140 and 100 scores from Tony Williams, which gave him just enough time to put the match at stalemate and set up a thrilling climax.
With plenty of vocal encouragement from the crowd a ton opener from Tony was countered by an 85 score from Kelvin and by more or less matching each other throw for throw they continued to whittle down their scores until a superb 60, 60, treble 15 shot left Tony Williams with 36 on the board which he duly dispatched to become the1983 champion.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1983/84 ...Round 1 Summary...Peter Locke who makes no secret of wanting the title that has so far eluded him got through at the expense of club mate Jimmy Martin along with Fred Trickett and Ron Lloyd. Ex champions Brian Starbuck, Ray Jones, Wayne Ward and Ray Phillips posted fine victories as did Ray Smith who produced some of his best ever form disposing of fancied Robert Phelps and Bob Bassett. Two 180,s was not enough to get Harold Sinnett past Philip Morgan of the Pant Club while John Gamble always looked a winner at the Tredegar Arms. Division two successes were in the form of Dai Rising and Gary Hamlin while the lone Division3 man was Peter Thomas who overcame the formidable Tommy Sullivan.
SEMI FINAL 1...PETER LOCKE 2..... DENIS PHILLIPS 0
1983/84 ..............(Morlais A)................ (Brewers A)
When Peter Locke took the stage with Denis Phillips of the Brewers in the first semi final everyone expected Locke to turn on the style to capture the only local singles title that has thus far eluded him and he responded well with a 19 dart winning leg.
Denis Phillips started finding the sixty bed in game two with a pair of ton scores, but
a hatrick of tons kept Locke in the driving seat right up to the finish which he clinched on double eight.
SEMI FINAL 2....FRED TRICKETT 2 .....RAY SMITH 0
1983/84 ................(Morlais A)...............(Brewers A)
Another Morlais Brewer confrontation in the second semi final saw Fred Trickett come from behind with scores of 100, and 118, to leave 52 which, he confidently nailed.
Looking confident Trickett opened the second leg with a ton and a further 137 shot, leaving Ray Smith who apart from a 121 effort, falling well short of his usual scoring game and with Tricketts first dart at double top, he set up the all Morlais final.
THE FINAL......PETER LOCKE 3..... FRED TRICKETT 0
1983/84 ..............(Morlais A) .................(Morlais A)
As expected the five legged final started with a bang, two ton scores from Trickett
was bettered by a 140 and 100, efforts from Locke who always looking in complete command took the first leg in 17darts.
A corking second leg saw a ton and 140 opening scores from Locke spurring Fred Trickett to retaliate with a pair of tons and a 140 and although reaching the finish shot first, he failed to nail it allowing the deadly accuracy of finishing by Peter Locke to make it 2-0 with a 64 checkout. With an outstanding performance in game three Peter Locke confirmed his Welsh number one rating with scores of 100, 140, 140, to win the singles title in 14 darts. SEASON 1984/85...Round 1 Summary... Les Corcoran Lyndon Price Ray Phillips Joe Lang Ray Jones and Adrian Thomas are six former champions who will battle again in round 2 while last years runner up Fred Trickett went against Lennie Davies of the Pant Club, who joined team mate Paul Williams who hit a 180 at the Rugby Club. The 1983 Champ Tony Williams had to concede to Tommy Jenkins who together with Jimmy Daley and Kevin Burville sailed through as Div 2 contestants.
The Gurnos have three players through with summer league champ Colin Williams joining Robert Phelps and Terry Barnett while the Rugby club had two successes with Alun Davies and Gareth Lewis. Robert Phelps(Gurnos A
SEMI FINAL 1....PETER LOCKE 2... PETER O.SULLIVAN 1
1984/85............... (Morlais A) ..............(Morlais A)
The meeting of club mates Peter Locke and Peter O,Sullivan in the first semi final set the flavour for the evening, with consistent ton scores gaining Peter Locke a very close first leg win. Peter O,Sullivan gained the approval of the crowd when with some super darts he levelled the match in twenty darts.
The last leg clincher went the Welsh Internationals way when with just 16 darts he displayed his obvious class with scores of 60, 60, 140, 60, 145, 36out.
SEMI FINAL 2 ..ROBERT PHELPS 2... BILLY COOKSEY 1
1984/85 ............. (Gurnos A)...................(Morlais A)
Billy Cooksey took the first leg in the second semi final encounter with Robert Phelps and looked well placed to win the match in game two, but a timely effort of a ton followed by a 137 score gave Phelps a chance at the double which he duly accepted.
Both players took a while to settle in the deciding leg and with a better run in to the double Robert Phelps snapped up the chance to meet Peter Locke in his first ever final with a double eight exit.
THE FINAL 84/85. PETER LOCKE 3....ROBERT PHELPS 1
The five legged final was a classic as four consecutive tons by Locke were matched by a125, 100, and 140 , from Phelps but it was Locke who took the leg in 17 darts.
Undeterred Robert Phelps played even better in the next game when with a maximum along the way, he squared proceedings on 52 finish in another 17 darter.
The third game could have gone either way as both players matched each others scoring attempts, but by just shading the race to the double Locke disposed of the 80 board requirement easily. Needing one more game to become the first player to retain the singles championship Peter Locke went up a further gear and with scores of 100, 105, 100, 100, 56, and double top he ended a magnificent match to confirm his number one rating.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON 1985/86..... Round 1 Summary
With no less than seven 180 maximum scores the first round of the Singles got off to a flying start. Reg Newbury, who once held the record for most maximums in a season hit another two in his win over Alan Evans joining clubmates Dai Thompsom, Ray Phillips and Philip Williams into round two. At the Cricket Club Roslin Cannon became only the second lady to record a maximum and almost made history by just failing to become the first lady to progress to the second round narrowly going down to Vince Lewis. A form book upset saw Peter Murphy topple 1975 winner Joe Lang while fellow ex champion Adrian Thomas who had played brilliantly throughout failed at the death to a superb Lyndon Price performance. Gurnos clubmates Tony Williams and John Davies set the bar at their venue and are joined by Colin Williams who had to sit out a spate of double finish misses ......
SEMI FINAL 1... LYNDON PRICE 2.. COLIN WILLIAMS 1
1985/86............... (Brewers A)................ (Gurnos A)
Lyndon Price set off like a rocket in the first semi final with 140, and 100 in his first two throws and although Colin Williams replied with a ton and 135 shots, Price took the leg with double top out. Price again started with early scores of 135 and 140 and Colin Williams once again replied with a 140 and ton of his own, to leave himself the chance to level the match with a double 4 out shot.
Once again Lyndon Price dictated the pace with a pair of tons as openers leaving Colin Williams trailing as he took the match with another double top out finish.
SEMI 2...... ...PETER O,SULLIVAN 2... JOHN DAVIES 0
1985/86.............(Morlais A).................... (Gurnos A)
The Peter O,Sullivan versus John Davies match saw a tight first leg just go the Morlais players way, as John Davies faded at the death, to leave Peter his out shot on two 16,s.
A 100 followed by a 140, gave Peter O,Sullivan the advantage in game two and although John Davies hit a prile of tons, he failed to clinch the double, allowing Peter to go through on a 56 finishing shot.
THE FINAL...LYNDON PRICE 3....PETER O,SULLIVAN 0
In what must rank as one of the best performances in a Dowlais singles final Lyndon Price, who had previously been the youngest winner of the title back in 1968, saw Peter O,Suillivan start the better as he won the race to the double in game one, but unable to finish it Price came from behind to take the leg.
Up went the quality of darts in game two with Lyndon price setting a blistering pace with scores of, 140, 100, 100, 41, 60out to leave Peter OSullivan two games down.
Incredibly Lyndon Price produced even better darts in the third leg, with his scores of 140, 60, 100, 41, and an amazing 160 checkout, bringing everyone to their feet as they acclaimed a very worthy Dowlais Singles Champion and only the third person to win the title twice.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1986/87.... Round 1 summary..... The reigning champion Lyndon Price paid dearly for missed double finishing shots going down to Gary Doel, while his son Mark fresh from his News of the World triumph, sailed through to round two. Another successful Penydarren player was Ray Smith who only dropped one leg at the Bruce, as did Dale Pinch, who was rarely troubled at the Labour Club. The Morlais Tavern provided no less than five winners with Adrian Thomas, Billy Cooksey, Paul Crump, Jimmy Barrett and Fred Trickett all successful, although Trickett was fortunate to survive a very ropey first round game. Wayne Titcombe just got the nod over Dean Lewis and joins stablemate Robert Lloyd who was too good for everyone at the Treifor
A maximum for Tommy Sullivan was enough to see him through, while in a feast of high scoring Vivian Morgan progressed as the only Aberglais player to win.
Consistent darts from Philip Williams earned him a fine win over Graham Hughes, while Paul McCarthy of the Martyrs B, overcome a considerable line up at the Labour Club, coming from behind to pip Brian Thomas with some super throwing.
SEMI FINAL 1.......RAY SMITH 2 ........ROBERT LLOYD 0
1986/87.............. (Penydarren A)........... (Labour A)
The first semi final saw Ray Smith take the two legs he needed from Robert Lloyd of the Labour Club, with a maximum, followed by a 105 score in game two, leaving him the winning double ten out shot, to put him in the final.
SEMI FINAL 2.....FRED TRICKETT 2..... PAUL CRUMP 1
1986/87 ..................(Morlais A)................. (Morlais A)
The Fred Trickett versus Paul Crump game had Trickett always ahead and although Paul Crump came desperately close to finishing it off it was Fred Trickett with the more accurate finishing, who booked his final place in the last leg decider.
THE FINAL86/87.... RAY SMITH 3.....FRED TRICKETT 2
1986/87................. (Penydarren A).......... (Morlais A)
The climax of the evening was as always the final which matched two previous semi finalists who were hoping to go that one bit better by becoming champion.
When Ray Smith looked the more accomplished player by taking leg one it looked as if the pre match favourite Fred Trickett had a major job on his hands to recover the initiative in the five legged final.
Taking full command in games two and three Fred Trickett put himself within one game of his objective leaving Ray Smith to improve his game or give best to the Glamorgan County player.
Game four proved to be a nailbiter with Trickett almost achieving his gaol, but Ray Smith would not concede and sneaked the win to make it two games apiece and set up a sudden death decider. What a tense affair the last leg turned out to be but it was Ray Smith who was first to the finishing shot requiring double top for the title. A ton score from Fred Trickett put the pressure on Ray Smiths finishing attempt, but composing himself, he approached the “oche” and coolly hit the double to become Dowlais Singles Champion 1987.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1987/88 Round 1 Summary...Roslin Cannon became the first lady player to win through to the second round beating all the men at the Carmarthen, while at the Legion defending champion Ray Smith went out in his first game, allowing Robert Gibbon whose total of ton plus scores included a maximum to see him through. Spectacular throwing from Martin Foley including a 154 and 112 checkout fixed his place, as did Vince Lewis who got the better of Paul Giles Twice previous champion Lyndon Price kept his hopes alive at the Pant Club while Glyn Sinnett finalist in 1970 clinched his place at the Slipper.
Pre match favourite Paul Crump allowed Gerald Jones of the Pant Club to nick his expected place while a 141 out shot got Steve Marks his second round spot. Glyn Sinnett who last contested a final in 1970 brought back the old times at the Slipper.
SEMI FINAL 1.... LYNDON PRICE 2.....RAY PHILLIPS 0
1987/88................ (Penydarren A).......... (Labour A)
A capacity crowd at the Catholic club saw Lyndon Price attempt to retain his singles title in the first semi final against Ray Phillips. Unfortunately both players were well below their best and the really big scores evaded them and in a lack lustre affair, it was Lyndon Price who emerged victorious two leg to nil
SEMI FINAL 2... PETER LOCKE 2.... TONY WILLIAMS 0
1987/88................ (Morlais A)............... (Gurnos A)
The second semi final proved to be a much better match with Tony Williams of the Gurnos opening with his customary high scoring game, but looking decidedly uncomfortable on the double finishes, he allowed Peter Locke to come from way back to take the leg.
The second game saw Peter Locke with a hatrick of tons sweep to the front and leave Tony Williams trailing, as he finished decisively to make the final yet again.
THE FINAL 87/88..PETER LOCKE 3.... LYNDON PRICE 1
The five leg final saw Peter Locke with a ton and 140, score gain the initiative and although Lyndon Price hit back, he did not get a throw at the double, as the Welsh International checked out on double sixteen.
Game two was a different story as Lyndon Price hit the front with a brace of tons and he duly took his chance with a double five exit.
The third leg proved vital as a ton and 135, effort from Peter Locke, was matched by 95, and 135, throws from Lyndon Price, but as Locke faltered on the checkout, Price threw away a golden opportunity with some stray darts which cost him the leg.. Locke made no mistake in what proved to be the last leg as he went up a gear to record openers of 140, and 100, and although Lyndon Price racked up a pair of tons he stilled required 76, as Peter Locke took the double finish and title for a record third time.

SEASON 1988/89 Round 1 Summary.......Pre match favourite Bill Cooksey went down to Mel Jones while reigning champion Peter Locke found it easy at the Tredegar Arms. Tony Williams was another comfortable winner as was, Lyndon Price and Graham Hughes, but a much closer affair saw Mark Virgin grab his chance over Gary Llewellyn
Tegwyn Lewis toppled Jason Morgan and Wayne Budding saw off Pat Cronin, while Jason Foley just failed to contain the in form Fred Trickett. Former champ Peter O,Sullivan beat Glyn Sinnett and the in form Jimmy Barrett sailed through at the Tavern, while veterans Jack Mahoney and Joe Lang contested a terrific final with “Snatchy” just getting the nod. Maximums from Geraint Smith and Paul Odell wasn’t enough as Colin Williams took the honours at the Iron Horse, while Simon Marks got through with his usual high scoring game.
SEMI FINAL 1 ....PETER LOCKE 0..... SIMON MARKS 2
1988/89................. (Morlais A)............. (Aberglais)
Red hot favourite Peter Locke took on the 21 year old Simon Marks in the first semi final in his bid to become the first player to win the singles championship a record four times. Starting with three tons in his first three visits to the board he looked to be on target, but coming from behind with scores of 125 and 100, Simon Marks took advantage of his leading throw by finishing on double top.
Locke stepped up a notch in game two with a brace of tons and a 140, checking out on 87, to level affairs. Simon Marks held on to his leading throw in the decider and caused a major upset by putting the Welsh International out of the competition as he booked his final spot with a double top finish.
SEMI FINAL 2..FRED TRICKETT 2.. GRAEME THOMAS 0
1988/89.............. (Morlais A)................... (Labour A)
The second semi saw Graeme Thomas in his first ever finals night struggle to get anywhere near his normal form against Fred Trickett, who with a couple of tons and a 91 score, left himself double top, which he comfortably put away.
Graeme Thomas won the race to the double in game two, but after missing with six attempts, Fred Trickett snapped up the opportunity to take the match 2-0.
THE FINAL 89/90.FRED TRICKETT 3... SIMON MARKS 0
1988/891....................... (Morlais A).......... (Aberglais)
Following his super semi final performance great things were expected of Simon Marks against Fred Trickett and although opening with a ton, he lost his momentum as the game progressed, allowing Trickett to take the leg with a classy 107 finish.
Fred Trickett improved his performance in game two and with scores of 100, 45, 140, 91, 85, and a double top finish he made it, 2-0 in 16 darts.
Needing one more leg to clinch the title, Trickett found himself trailing when a 117 score left Marks with just 103 on the board, but responding brilliantly with a score of 136, Trickett gained the initiative and took the Singles Championship crown.

DOWLAIS & PENYDARREN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
SEASON 1989/90 Round 1 Summary....Shock results saw Peter Locke crash out to Jimmy Barrett and Judith Thomas flatten three Div 1 players to win through, along ,with John Sutton and Keith Evans. Bill Cooksey and John Gamble kept the Morlais interest alive as did defending champ Fred Trickett. Hoping to go one better this year Simon Marks sailed through, as did Graham Hughes who hit two maximums. Some hairy moments saw Ron Lloyd scrape home over Paul Odell, while fellow previous champions Adrian Thomas, Peter O,Sullivan and Vivian Morgan, all made it as well. A 145 checkout by Phil Locke and a maximum each for Jason Foley and Neil Smith were the highlights, as Neil Smith took the honours at the Gurnos Club. Veteran Jackie Mahoney came from nowhere to beat Daryl James, while Mark Price won comfortably at the Tavern, as did Horse & Groom hopeful Tommy Sullivan. Kerry Davies celebrated his return to Dowlais by winning, as did Philip Foley who bagged his third maximum of the season.
SEMI FINAL 1 .....JOHN GAMBLE 2 ....BILLY COOKSEY 1
1989/90................. (Morlais A)................ (Morlais A)
Both John Gamble and Billy Cooksey were a little below par when they met in the first semi final of the singles competition and following many double finish misses by both players, Cooksey finally took the first leg.
Both players improved in game two with Gamble countering a pair of tons from Cooksey with 85 scores and a leg pinching 60 finish.
A ton opener in the last game from Cooksey was cancelled out by a levelling ton score from Gamble, who thoroughly deserved his victory and singles final place.
SEMI FINAL 2 ...VIVIAN MORGAN 2 .JIMMY BARRETT 0
1989/90..............(Horse & Groom)............. (Morlais B)
Jimmy Barrett failed to match the consistent scoring of Vivian Morgan in the second semi final, as a couple of tons steered the Horse and Groom player to a leg one win.
Although Barrett made more of a fight of it in game two, there was no stopping Viv Morgan who sped to a 2-0 victory.
THE FINAL ........VIVIAN MORGAN 3... JOHN GAMBLE 1
1989/90.............. (Horse & Groom)........ (Morlais A)
The final saw consecutive opening scores of 100, 140 by Viv Morgan, pegged back by the consistent scoring of John Gamble, who did well to take the first leg in 24 darts.
A determined Viv Morgan hit back to get on level terms, by taking the second leg in 17 darts, with scores of 125, 45, 140, 41, 90, and a sixty checkout.
He followed this up by taking a 2-1 lead when topping John Gambles pair of ton scores, with 100 and 125 shots of his own to win the third leg.
With the crowd giving both players every encouragement, Viv Morgan responded brilliantly to win the title with scores of 60, 95, 100, 100, 78, and 68out to become only the third player to win both the Dowlais and Merthyr singles championships.

SEASON 1990/91....Round 1 Summary.. Peter Locke who last won the title in 1988 powered his way through without dropping a leg as did Mark Williams who also bagged a maximum.
Jeannette Hyde came close, just losing out to Terry Lewis, while Steve Dunn with the Masters title under his belt, joins Paul Crump in round two, as does Gary Giles who was the only Aberglais man to make it to round two.
Brilliant darts from Peter Lozano earned him his win, as did 1974 champ Bill Cooksey
while the Cardigan have Jeff Quantick, Terry Misselbrook and Paul Odell through.
Lyndon Price hopes of a third title were crushed by Granville Price, while fellow champion Tony Williams celebrated his return to Dowlais with a win at the Tavern.
Robert Lloyd kept the Labour flag flying with a win over Tony Norbury, while a 180
from Keith Evans wasn’t enough to stop Simon Marks booking his round two slot
SEMI FINAL 1.. PETER LOCKE 2....... KERRY DAVIES 1
The first semi final had Kerry Davies making his grand final night debut and it couldn’t have been much harder as he met three times champion Peter Locke.
Undeterred by reputations Kerry Davies took the first leg and everyone wondered if in a repeat of the 1989 final Peter Locke would make a surprise exit, but there were no such thoughts on Peter Locke’s mind as he swept to the final by winning both remaining legs.
SEMI FINAL 2 ...MARK WILLIAMS 2...JOHN DAVIES 0
Mark Williams took advantage of the uncharacteristic double finish failures of John Davies of the Gurnos Club in the second semi final, to pull off a fine two nil victory and set himself up for a daunting task ahead, at the hands of Peter Locke in the five legged final.
THE FINAL......PETER LOCKE 3...... MARK WILLIAMS 1
1990/91.............. (Morlais A)............... (Morlais A)
A hatrick of ton scores by Mark Williams wasn’t enough to contain Peter Locke in the opening leg as he finished before Mark could attempt his double top board requirement.
Yet another hatrick of opening ton scores from Mark William’s in game two proved good enough to allow him to level the match, going out on sixty.
Peter Locke’s response was dynamic, as with scores of 95, 180 maximum, 180, maximum and 46 checkout, he went 2-1 up in 12 darts.
Game four saw Mark Williams unable to find the sixty bed as freely as he had done previously and as a result he fell way behind, however a late recovery which netted him a 100 and 116 score, left him with 36, to put the pressure back on Peter Locke.
Needing 100 Peter Locke looked supremely confident on the “oche” and duly finished in fine style to become the only player to win the Dowlais Singles Championship a record breaking four times..

THE DOWLAIS MASTERS CHARITY
The Dowlais and Penydarren dart league had been making charity contributions to various local charities for many years with various events generating money in the form of gate money , donations and competitions.
They were usually in the form of challenge matches against other leagues, or exhibition matches with a professional dart player, taking on a selection of Dowlais league players.
It was always an idea of mine to incorporate into the seasons programme a competition involving all players who had previously won the much coveted Dowlais Singles Championship as a regular charity function, which would always generate a considerable income and provide entertainment for all who attended.
The format was as follows. All previous champions who were still registered in the Dowlais league would be invited to take part in a knockout competition with a tote betting system available to anyone who wished to wager on the final outcome of the nights matches.
The system was that on the commencement of the competition betting slips would be distributed for any amount of stake money the punter wished to speculate on their particular favourite, to win the competition and then the draw was made for the sixteen players who contested the first round, with the odds on each one displayed.
The first round matches were played and the remaining eight players were once again available to the tote betting system before a new draw would take place.
The odds on each player were once again announced and displayed with the different colour slips for round two denoting the changed odds of the participants.
This form of betting, with a new draw every time, was undertaken every round up until the final thereby producing a considerable income of which the charity would take an acceptable percentage.
The committee agreed my proposal and the first event was scheduled for May 1982
The first invited ex champions were
Les Corcoran(1965) Lyndon Price(1968) Terry Thomas (1963/67/72)
Ray Phillips(1970) Billy Cooksey(1974) Joe Lang(1975)
Brian Starbuck(1976) Ron Lloyd(1977) Adrian Thomas(1979) Ray Jones(1980) Peter O,Sullivan(1981)
The first ever winner of the Dowlais Masters was Ray Jones of Abertwssog at 5-1 odds
The 1983 Dowlais Masters was Ron Lloyd who won through with generous 10-1 odds
The 1984 final allowed every registered player to compete for the remaining places
but the committee felt that the inclusion of Peter Locke would affect the income generated by the punters reluctant to bet against him winning the event, so he was asked to stand down, which he very sportingly did for that, and every subsequent Masters Charity. *******************
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1984
BOB BASSETT (Qualifier) 2 RAY JONES (1980 Champ) 0
The 1984 final had Bob Bassett who had entered the competition as a qualifier taking on the competition hot favourite Ray Jones who having won the inaugural Masters crown in 1982, looked a good bet to repeat the victory.
What a turnabout it turned out to be as Bob Bassett who had accounted for Ray Smith
Ron Lloyd, in previous rounds completed a superb performance by becoming 1984 Masters Champion.
Following a presentation to Peter Locke for standing down from the competition a challenge match between Locke and Bassett was arranged where Bob Bassett the new Masters champion set a seal; on the night by winning 2-0 .
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1985
F.TRICKETT(Qualifier) 2 VIV MORGAN (Qualifier) 1
An absorbing 1985 Masters had two qualifiers contesting the final ,Fred Trickett of the Morlais A, and Vivian Morgan of the Gurnos Club and what a show they put on.
Viv Morgan was the first to hit the high scores with 140 and 120 with a bounce out getting him to the double, which he easily put to bed.
With his second maximum score of the night, Viv Morgan looked set to finish it, but hesitation on the double cost him dearly, as Fred Trickett pinched the leg.
In the all important last leg Viv Morgan led off with an encouraging 140 score, but with a burst which included a 140, 140, and 135 Fred Trickett who having disposed of Reg Newbury, Tony Williams, and Peter O,Sullivan in earlier rounds, hit the double to win the Masters Championship of 1985.
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1986
STEVE DUNN(Qualifier) 2 PAUL CRUMP (Qualifier) 0
Once again it was the qualifiers who made the final with Paul Crump who in beating Mark Williams, Tony Williams and Ron Lloyd to reach the final, met a determined Steve Dunn on a debut Masters appearances for both players.
Both players had won ten games each through qualifying games and up to the final and aimed to make it eleven, as they took one leg apiece.
The sudden death decider saw Dunne race ahead to the double finish with three ton scores, just bettering Crump’s ton and a run of sixty, and eighty scores.
But with both players suffering agonisingly close finish attempts, Steve Dunn finally secured the elusive double to become 1986 masters champion. **********
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1987
RAY PHILLIPS (1971 Champ) 2 JOHN DAVIES (Qual) 0
Contesting his first final for some years Ray Phillips the 1971 Dowlais singles champion got off to a flyer with consistent scoring in the first leg, which landed him a comfortable win.
John Davies who had qualified for the event and reached the final with wins over Lyndon Price, Graham Hughes and defending Masters champion Steve Dunn, tried everything to square the match, but it was not to be as Ray Phillips had the scent of victory and his determination paid off as he became the 1987 Masters Champion.
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1988
P.O,SULLIVAN (1981 Champ) 2 TONY WILLIAMS (1983)1
Wins over John Gamble, Steve Dunn, and Vince Lewis, put Tony Williams in his first ever Masters final and with a fine performance, took the first leg off Peter O,Sullivan.
Game two saw the roles reversed when a much more positive approach from Peter O,Sullivan landed him the equalising leg. The decider was a classic and with scores of 85,100, 81, 100, 110, and 81 checkout it was Peter O,Sullivan who earlier had accounted for Adrian Thomas, Joe Lang, and Ray Phillips, who picked up the Masters trophy.
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1989
BILLY COOKSEY (1974 Champ) 2 RAY SMITH (Qual) 0
Having beaten Ray Phillips, Lyndon Price, and Adrian Thomas on his way to the final, Ray Smith was in fine form in what promised to be a cracking match with Billy Cooksey.
It took a 17 dart finish to give Billy Cooksey leg one, when with scores of a ton and 140, he just kept ahead of Ray Smith, but the Penydarren man was soon back in the frame when he took leg two. The final could have so easily gone Ray Smith’s way as he missed with two attempts at the double finish and with Cooksey not allowing him a third chance he added Smith’s name to Ron Lloyd, John Davies and Mark Williams, as players he had toppled on his way to become Masters Champion 1989
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1990
STEVE DUNN(1986 Master) 2 W Cooksey(1974 Champ) 0
In an absorbing final Steve Dunn was attempting to become the first ever two time winner of the Masters competition and started bang on target, when with a 121 and ton scores along the way, he nailed a 70 finish to take the first leg.
Billy Cooksey who had put paid to the hopes of Mark Williams, John Davies, and Ray Phillips, in the build up to the final, could do little to contain a rampant Steve Dunn , hitting four consecutive tons, to leave him in his wake, as he had done to Kerry Davies, Geraint Smith, and Graham Hughes to became Masters Champion for 1990
THE DOWLAIS MASTERS 1991
ADRIAN THOMAS (1979 Champ) 2 Tom Sullivan(Qu)) 0
Tommy Sullivan surprised everyone by making his Masters debut a successful event as he made the final, with wins over Jeannette Hyde, the first lady to contest the Masters, Tegwyn Lewis, and Ray Smith and with scores of a ton and 125, safely tucked away leg one over Adrian Thomas.
The Morlais landlord had come out of retirement to contest the Masters and soon made amends in a much tighter game two, which Adrian Thomas fully deserved..
Having disposed of Tudor Williams, Tommy Jenkins, and Lyndon Price in earlier rounds, Adrian Thomas knuckled down to the task ahead with a hatrick of ton scores, leaving Tommy Sullivan stranded and it was no surprise as he lifted the Masters title with a clinical first time double finish.
